PROJECT:

On 6 March 2023, a link to the New Lynn Pump Station isolation valve was severed causing the valve to close while the main was at full flow. The transient pressure generated blew out gaskets in flanges and uprooted the pipe support column in the line downstream from pump #1.

MTL ROLE:

MTL was asked to review the nature of the incident, assess the scope of the damage and provide recommendations on the repair/reinstatement of the pump station to full working capacity.

MTL carried out a preliminary transient assessment enabling identification of critical areas for damage and inspection, including deformation of the pipeline and failure of the pipe support column. MTL provided guidance for the inspections and repairs, and redesigned the pipe support column to better meet the working requirements.

PROJECT OUTCOME:

Watercare Services Ltd are currently managing the inspection and repair process recommended by MTL. The pump station is expected to return to full service by the end of the year.
