MTL provided civil and mechanical design and contract management to upgrade a 380mm OD raw water pipeline 450 metres long between a pump station beside the Waitoa River and a raw water storage tank at Fonterra’s Waitoa Dairy Factory site.
MTL investigated various options, from routing a pipeline above ground on pipe racks to running a new pipe supported by existing buildings. MTL also considered constructing a new pipeline using trenchless methods and installing fiberglass linings inside the existing pipes.
Pipe flow analyses found around half of the pipeline could be reduced in diameter.
So, to address Fonterra’s requirements for cost-effective construction and minimal disruption to factory operations and site access, MTL recommended a combination of slip lining and pipe replacement using conventional trenching methods.
A tender from Sam Pemberton Civil Construction Ltd was accepted and they completed the work in time and within budget. An excellent working relationship between Fonterra site staff, MTL personnel and Sam Pemberton Civil Construction Ltd contributed to a successful outcome.
The project was later awarded recognition within Fonterra:
“The project won the Medium Project Category of the Fonterra Engineering Excellence awards. The main factors that contributed to the win were – thorough investigation of alternatives and arriving at a solution which resulted in substantial savings to the project budget; thorough and sound design; a robust installation plan which resulted in quick installation / commissioning timeframe and no plant downtime during the busiest production period of the year.”
